Description
Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, has a long history of Islamic education. Madrasas, Islamic religious schools, have been an important part of the educational landscape in Zanzibar for centuries.
The oldest known madrasa in Zanzibar is the Marashi Madrasa, founded in the 18th century. The madrasa is located in Stone Town, the historic center of the island’s capital, and remains in operation to this day. It offers courses in Islamic theology and law, as well as Arabic language instruction.
Another prominent madrasa in Zanzibar is the Ijumaa Mosque Madrasa, which was founded in the 19th century. The madrasa is affiliated with the Ijumaa Mosque, one of the largest and most revered mosques in Zanzibar. Like the Marashi Madrasa, it offers courses in Islamic studies and Arabic language instruction.
Other notable madrasas in Zanzibar include the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Madrasa, the Quba Mosque Madrasa, and the Makunduchi Islamic Institute. These madrasas, along with others in Zanzibar, play an important role in preserving and promoting Islamic education and culture on the island.
