I feel very lucky to live in Zanzibar, an island bursting with history and culture in every crevice. The citizens are genuine, friendly, and go out of their way to welcome travellers with a smile. The narrow streets of Zanzibar draw in visitors from miles away to explore our heritage and culture. Our island is very multicultural as the architecture around the island reveals different religious cultures such as the mosques, churches and temples seen throughout the island. And of course Zanzibar offers beautiful scenic views such as the white sand beaches and turquoise water under the beautiful African blue sky.
My love of my homeland Zanzibar, makes being a photographer here even more special and meaningful. Zanzibar has had many famous photographers including the Coutinho Bros, A.C. Gomes and Son, Pereira de Lordand his brothers, and many more. Exploring their works has really cemented the importance of photography in preserving the history and culture of Zanzibar.
In 2004 I started photography full time, my aim is to capture the vibrant beauty of this island in the moment. I started my business with a small Canon G10 camera and now I use professional photography gear to capture the beautiful moments of individuals and couples as seen in my portfolio.
In 2015 my dream came true when I decided to open up a photo gallery located in Gizenga street, Stone town Zanzibar. My gallery displays monochrome photographs as well as color photographs capturing the daily lives of the Zanzibari people along with the historic architecture seen all over Zanzibar.
As a Zanzibari I say in swahili “Karibu sana Zanzibar” which translates to you are very welcome to Zanzibar.
