Description
Ngalawa is a traditional fishing boat used by locals in Jambiani and other coastal areas of Zanzibar. These boats are small and narrow and are typically made from hand-carved wooden logs that are lashed together with coconut fiber ropes.
The ngalawa is a popular sight in Jambiani as it is used to fish for a variety of species including octopus, crabs, snappers, groupers, and lobsters. The boats are also used for transportation between neighboring villages and to neighboring islands.
The ngalawa has no motor and is propelled by a large sail made from cloth or banana leaves. The sail is attached to a small mast at the center of the boat and the crew uses long wooden paddles to steer and navigate the boat.
Tourists visiting Jambiani can take a ngalawa tour to experience the traditional fishing methods and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the coast. Many local fishermen offer these tours and provide insight into the cultural significance of the ngalawa in the Zanzibari way of life.
